It is Irondequoit’s intent to create a welcoming space for friends and family to visit their loved ones. These regulations are designed to maintain beauty and ensure that personal decorations do not infringe on neighboring plots, crypts or niches.

Planting Regulations Graphic depicting the planting area in front of a grave marker.

Planting is permitted along the front of all monuments and markers.

These plantings shall be:

  • Within 12 inches from the front of the monument or marker
  • No larger in width than the monument or marker
  • No more than 18 inches in height

Prohibited Items

  • Artificial flowers
  • Glass objects
  • Statues
  • Lights
  • Stones
  • Shepherd's Hooks
  • Toys or novelties

This is a safety regulation, as objects can be picked up or thrown by mowing and snow removal equipment. The Cemetery reserves the right to remove and dispose of all unauthorized objects.

Fresh Cut Flowers

Fresh flowers may be placed on graves in metal or plastic cemetery vases (no glass). Potted plants shall not exceed 8 inches in diameter.

Funeral flowers will be removed by the Cemetery, preferably on the day of interment. Should members of the family wish to preserve some of them, we respectfully suggest that this be done at the time of the interment service.

American Flags

American flags, up to 12 by 18 inches, may be placed in planting areas commencing Memorial Day. In respect for the flag, the Cemetery will, at its discretion, remove any flags that have become unsightly.

Winter Decorations

The Cemetery permits the placing of wreaths and crosses in planting areas, 12 inches in front of marker, from November 1st to April 15th. Any winter decoration remaining after April 15th, shall be removed. Wreaths shall be no more than 24 inches in diameter and may be set on non-metallic stands or easels or hung on monuments. Metal stakes or stands are not allowed. Hearts, bibles, novelties, and evergreen blankets are not permitted at any time.

Permanent Plantings

Shrubs, bushes, or trees may not be planted on lots or graves. In sections where such plantings already exist, the Cemetery, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to remove any or all of these as conditions warrant.

Lawn and Landscape Maintenance

There is an established plan for landscaping Cemetery property. Lot Holders are not allowed to mow or fertilize their lots as this will interfere with regular landscape maintenance. Fencing, edging and borders as well as mulching with wood chips, stones or shells is prohibited.

Mausoleum and Columbarium Decorations

No objects of any kind, floral, decorative, or photos may be placed on the crypt/niche front at any time. Any such objects shall be removed and will be disposed.

Please note: Services will not be scheduled on Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day.

The Cemetery reserves the right to remove decorations that have become withered or unsightly, or that violate the regulations contained herein, to maintain the best appearance of the grounds.
